The Lipogems® Autologous Fat Therapy is a regenerative medicine procedure that uses the body’s own fat tissue to treat injuries and degenerative conditions, especially in joints and soft tissues. This therapy harnesses the natural regenerative properties of adipose tissue and is primarily applied to orthopedic issues, such as osteoarthritis, cartilage damage, or tendon injuries.
Joint degeneration becomes increasingly common with age and an active lifestyle, making it a widespread “public health issue.” For a long time, cartilage damage was considered irreversible, as damaged cartilage tissue cannot regenerate itself. Often, joint replacement surgery remains the only option. Pain is typically managed with medications and physical therapy, which, however, have no direct effect on tissue regeneration.
In Lipogems® therapy, autologous fat is used because it contains a high concentration of mesenchymal cells with reparative properties. Additionally, adipose tissue contains growth factors and molecules that can contribute to tissue healing. Injecting autologous fat can promote a joint-friendly metabolism that alleviates inflammation and pain and, in the best case, slows the progression of osteoarthritis.
This innovative therapy has reached thousands of patients worldwide and is being explored in over 20 clinical studies for its potential applications.
Through a minimally invasive liposuction procedure on the abdomen (fat cells contain significantly more stem cells than bone marrow), a small amount of fat tissue is extracted.
The extracted tissue is processed in a special Lipogems® system, where it is cleansed, broken down, and refined. Blood cells, oils, and other unnecessary components are removed, resulting in a dense solution of micro-fat particles.
This prepared fat solution, rich in stem cells and other regenerative factors, is injected into the affected area, such as a joint or injured tendon.
Risks are minimal, but as with any treatment, side effects can occur. These may include swelling, bruising at the extraction site, and, in rare cases, infections.
Initial studies and clinical experiences show promising results. Many patients report significant pain reduction and improved mobility.
